As with many other procedures, colonoscopy is being increasingly done in doctor's offices or other facilities that are not required to report their activities to the state. If a doctor does many or all colonoscopy procedures in a facility that does not report to the state his or her volume will not be accurately reflected in this report. If your doctor, or a doctor that has been recommended to you, is either not listed in these reports or is listed with a low volume, you should ask about their experience and where they usually perform colonoscopy. What follows are reports of colonoscopy procedures performed in New York State in 2002. Colonoscopy is a procedure using a fiber-optic tube to examine the large intestine for tumors or other abnormalities. The report aggregates all of the individual records that contain the ICD-9 Code 45.23 in any procedure field. The total number of reported procedures is 134,142.
