What follows are reports of excision or destruction of intervertebral disc procedures performed in New York State in 2002. The procedure involves the surgical removal or excision of a ruptured (herniated) disk that is compressing, irritating or injuring a nerve root. Disks are made of cartilage and separate the vertebrae of the spinal column. The report aggregates all of the individual records that contain the ICD-9 Codes 80.50 and 80.51 in any procedure field. The total number of reported procedures is 19,163.
