Safe Compounding Legislation Introduced

The Safe Drug Compounding Act of 2007 is due to be introduced by Senators Edward Kennedy and Richard Burr. The law would require of compounded drugs the same oversight that is required by the FDA for standard prescription drugs.

Along with several other consumer and women’s advocacy organizations, the Center for Medical Consumers has signed a letter of support for this legislation because compounding pharmacy companies are engaging in large-scale manufacturing and the widespread marketing of prescription drugs. As such, they should be required to prove the safety and efficacy of their products. And all promotional activities should be based only on study results.

Since the 1980s, the compounding pharmacy business has gone from a small-scale operation to a more than $2 billion in annual sales.
